Pope Benedict’s twitter to be closed on February 27

VATICAN CITY— The Pope who recently launched his twitter account with over two million followers, will permanently be closed next week when Pope Benedict XVI leaves Vatican office according to Vatican Radio who announced it last friday.

The Pope launched his official Twitter Account last December 12 under the name @pontifex and it attracted over 1.5 Million followers.

“It seemed unimaginable one could continue to use a communication tool that is so popular and powerful during the Sede Vacante (Vacant Seat) period,” Vatican Radio said.

The Pope will announce and post his final tweet on February 27, when he bid farewell to over 1.2 billion Catholics around the world. His farewell will be held in St. Pete’s Square.

The twitter account will then be closed on February 28 when the Pope formally steps down, according to Vatican Radio.

Theres no clear successor yet for Pope Benedict but there are possible candidates including Italian Angelo Scola, Odilo Scherer from Brazil, American Timothy Dolan, and Gianfranco Ravasi are all active Twitter users within the Church.
